Firstly if you had already specified a network folder and now digiKam doesn't work you should delete configuration files, where is specified your Albums location.
- make sure digiKam isn't running
$ ps -aux | grep digikam
if there is more then one line kill the process by the kill command
$ kill 1234
The number 1234 stands for it's PID. - After there is no instance of digiKam do to your home folder and delete file located here:
~/.kde/share/config/digikamrc - Go to folder from where you tried to load photos and delete files named "digikam3.db" and "digikam3.db-journal".
Secondly, if your already digiKam started, specify a folder on local disk. Something like ~/.digikam. DigiKam will create there a database file probably called digikam3.db
Then go to your network storage (in my case /media/photo) and create there a symlink which points to your hard drive by command:
ln -s ~/.digikam/digikam3.db
Now you can change path in digiKam's settings and photos will be loaded.
